This might be useful for Jeep owners - in case you missed it or don't get a message regarding the recall (as may happen if you aren't the original owner for example).

"Chrysler is recalling 469,000 Jeep four-wheel drives worldwide because they can shift into neutral without warning on startup.

The recall affects 2005 to 2010 Grand Cherokees and 2006 to 2010 Commanders."

Just shifting into neutral bi itself, that's not much of a problem, unlike the steering boxes on earlier models falling off the chassis by themselves as you drive.

That was a tad more serious. Killed a few in USA.
A local builder had one fall off and no steer, happened as he backed out of a bay.
One phone call and it was fixed with no more said. I wonder why.

That was years ago in the very early XJ's. The steering boxes didn't just suddenly fall off, the chassis cracked at the point where they were mounted. A very obvious clunking noise was heard every time the wheel was turned. It would have to be ignored for a very long time to get to the point where the steering box fell off. The fix was to weld a strengthening plate to the chassis.
Most vehicle manufacturers have recalls being carried out all the time. It is part of the dealer servicing requirements to check for recalls and updates everytime a vehicle comes into the workshop. Most of these involve a flash update for a control unit. Chrysler have one of the best systems around, where any updates etc. will appear on the technicians screen as soon as he plugs the computer into the car without the need to search for it. They are a very proactive company when it comes to this sort of thing.
