Hi All,
Well at last we finally purchased our first van (S/H on our budget) in Brisbane last Friday. With the advice from some members on this forum, as to what to look out for and what to look for, I think we started to get “caravanned out” after a week at looking at vans of all shapes, sizes and layouts. We settled on a 96 model Golf Northwind 17’ pop-top. One owner first registered in 97, original papers and all books for fridge, stove and tow hitch etc in excellent condition. Everything we wanted in a van as it ticked all the boxes on our check list.
We towed it home to Roma on Saturday, very easy towing behind the Patrol, I’ll see how it is with a load in it soon. We are now are getting ready for our first shake down trip to Sarina in a couple of weeks (after #3 Grandchild is born). In August/Sept will be our first big trip to Darwin and down the centre to Alice and the Rock.
We hope to meet some other happy travelers on the road in the near future.

Laurie & Glenda.

Laurie and Glenda,

Welcome to the mad house. You are sure to love your travels and meeting many wonderful people. The great thing about caravanning is that we are all on a budget and nobody seems to care.

Stay safe

Now is probably a good time to do an advanced driving course, so you both know what you can do in an emergency before the whole kit and caboodle ends up topsy turvy as a road train cruises by.

Unless of course you already have heavy vehicle experience?

May seem overkill but we're all experts aren't we, and of course great drivers especially as we get to finally be senior citizens. Just the time we shouldn't be doing what we do.

Sounds like a good buy from a good brand. Hope the Bay Prawns are still running when you get to Sarina. We got a couple of Kilo's with just a throw net - 84 in one cast.

J&R's post above sounds like another armchair expert with gratuitous advice that was not requested.

Enjoy your travels
