We are leaving in 3 weeks for a 3 month trip to North Qld & returning via Central Australia. Just a question about taking a caravan into Rainbow Valley Reserve & Henbury Meteorites Reserve. This is our 4th visit & have tent camped at Rainbow Valley a few years ago. We take our pop top off road many times & just drive to the conditions so gravel etc not a problem. This trip we will be taking the van to East & West MacDonnells & looking to slowly come south & hoping to have a night at Rainbow Valley & then one at Henbury Meteorites (not to do all the Ernest Giles Rd).
Has anyone taken a caravan to either of these 2 places? The alternative would be to leave the van at Stuarts Well roadhouse & do day trips. Thanks

I live out that way.Rainbow Valley, we've only had fun after a rain out there, we've got some coming in 2-3 days, how much I dont know. Henbury is a non issue. Ernest Giles, unless there has been a deluge, you can do that in a normal car..

Cheers..Pete

Willykj

You can happily stay out at Rainbow Valley, I think its 10-15km from the main road. This time of the year its going to be pretty cold out there overnight. Stuarts Well aka Jims Place has just changed ownership so not sure where they are at in the transition. There is really not much there at all, you've got the Camel Farm next door, you can run down to Henbury and the visit there will probably be an hour or so, there isnt that much to see.

If you have time I would STRONGLY suggest Kings Canyon, go down via Ernest Giles road then hang a right, that is definately worth seeing.

The ONLY advice I would give to exploring on dirt roads, let the tyres down. I've seen so many folks drive out 50km on dirt roads thinking they are wasting their time doing that because others dont. I have a high volume ARB unit and I can get air back into the tyres in 10 minutes or less.... Dropping them form 40psi to 28 is a no brainer and the ride is SO much more comfortable....

If there is anything specific you'd like to know about places up here dont be shy to ask :-)

Pete

Thanks again Pete. We leave home tomorrow & at this stage we are undecided on going into Kings Canyon (we have been there twice before & done all the walks). If we did decide to go would the Ernest Giles Road be Ok for a standard van bearing in mind that I often do gravel/outback roads. Thanks

We just finished our outback trip and we found a track that comes into Rainbow Valley from the East.... Very different view of Rainbow Valley coming in from that direction. This was the quickest way in as were coming from Chambers Pillar. We past a Aboriginal Community and stopped to chant and after for directions.... The old lady was quite nice to talk to....
