Windorah seems like a decent little town, but I was there when it was not "races" time...who knows what sort of people pass through...although I've never experienced anything but nice people in the outback, even tourists.
Hmmm. Hard call to make.

We travelled to Birdsville in 2011, all three toyotas towing caravans. One was a golf, and two Evernew's. None set up as dedicated off road vans - we survived the trip without any drama's. The road was graded just before the races and we passed very little traffic either going in or on the return trip. A stone stomper or similar set up for the rear of the vehicle would see little or no damage from flying rocks.
there are some great camps to be found, particularly just before entering the main street on the banks of the diamantina river.
There is a tap in the main street to refill water tanks for showers etc. The town was busy but there was a great atmosphere everywhere we went. Take the van, travel to conditions (we travelled at 70 - 80km's on the way in and perhaps a little slower on the return) and enjoy the trip. We camped on the banks of the Diamantina just near the causway-it was rocky but provided a good place to park for a few days.[img]

We arrived at a similar time. The road was in great shape as not much of the traffic had gone to birdsville at that stage. If you are set up for free camping, there are planty of spots to be had . as i said, water is available in the main street so that wont be a problem. as on any gravel road, just pepare your rig to cut down on flying roacks.
This linkhttp://www.stonestomper.com.au/ will give you some pointers.

From what i understand.
If you havnt booked a spot at the caravan park, Free camping on the banks of the Diamantina just near the causway, Will be your only option.
And its first in best dressed.
Spots at the caravan park start selling for the next year as soon as the race's finish.
