Hi All,
Visited
Mudgee /
Gulgong recently and stayed in local caravan park. Would like to return, however prefer
bush camping. Has anyone any ideas within 1/2 hour away, I can only find sites 1 hour or more away. Thanks Nicole

Some time ago, maybe 12 months,
Mudgee council was successfully lobbied by its caravan parks to close free and council-run low-cost
camp sites that were seen as competition. My guess is that 1 hour is as close as you'll get.

You're right Frank, the council also tried to close the showground in
Gulgong for camping but it is managed by a "Trust" over which they have no control.
Like you Nicole I prefer
bush camping but the
Gulgong showground is a good alternative.

Hi Nicole
I located a
picnic area not far from
Mudgee suitable for camping. Contact me through my profile if you are interested.

Hi Nicole
I thought you would be able to, however you can email me for the map. My information was up to date in 2011 but as Frank has said above the shire closed free campsites a year ago, I cannot guarantee that camping will still be allowed, but
well worth checking it out.

There is a large road side
rest area at
the junction of
the Black Stump Way and Golden Highway about 40km north of
Gulgong (Coolah Rd and Dubbo-
Newcastle Rd
junction) which from memory has
toilets. I'd use it as an overnight stop, not somewhere to set up
camp at.
Alternatively there must be some spots amongst the bush on the Cassillis Rd, NE of
Mudgee or at Lake Windemere just south of
Mudgee on the
Lithgow Rd.

Nicole. Half way between
Mudgee and
Gulgong near the model plane (?) flying area there is a piece of public land on the river side. You will see a small metal indicator on the
gate near the
bridge and possibly some campers just visible from the road. This is part of public land set aside for drovers moving cattle, (can't remember what it's called) Terrific spot.

It might be a TSR ( travelling stock route ).......these are public lands, and are a good source to
check out for some
free camping......not sure if you could search for available ones ??

Thanks for the memory jolt Gronk, TSR is exactly what I couldn't remember.
I recently searched the 'net for TSR sites in NSW hoping to buy a Government map or the like, no such luck.

Worth having a look
at this old post here about camping on Travelling Stock Routes (TSRs).
Cheers,
Val.
