Hi all,

Before i post my question, let me remark this is a wicked site with good (mostly!) opinions on a wide range of 4WDriving.

I'm a W.A. bloke, and have (after months of pain-staking deliberation) recently decided to buy a LWB GQ Nissan Patrol, my first 4WD.

My budget for the car is $11,000.

For this, the MUST parameters are a 4.2L DIESEL patrol (either DX or ST model) with 180,000-200,000 km, good service history, no rust, in original condition (i.e. no modifications - that would take the fun out of it for me!). A bullbar & towbar already fitted would be good also.

My question is: What year model should I be able to get for this money, taking the above parameters into consideration, and what condition of the car is reasonable?
Examples of recently purchased 4.2L diesel GQ patrol's prices & condition appreciated.

Also any info on considering jap imported GQ's & any other fourby's to consider (don't do any SERIOUS 4wd) much appreciated

The robster.

P.S. Sorry if I repeated a Q similar to this put up before, but I searched?

You dont want much, Low klms, Diesel, ST, No Rust, no Mods, and low $$??

Good luck finding a LWB for $11k to start with in Diesel, and if you do, it will either be high klm, or a POS....

www.gqpatrol.com for things to look out for on GQs.

Imports - its up to you, but majority think to steer clear... You have no guarentee on the cars history or klms...

I think the money you are throwing in wont buy the kms or condition you want....... You are talking about at least a $15000 vehicle....
You will buy a 89-93 in average cond with 250ish k's for your money...___________________________________

I went through all that stuff about 9 months ago, looked at so many GQ's before I bought mine. For $11000 they will all be high Kms or rusty and flogged out or both. For something like you are suggesting - which is what I bought, I saw nothing decent under about $15-16000

If you mind telling me, what year GQ did you eventually buy, and how many k's & what condition was it in - +price paid, would be very helpful!

No worries. Ended up getting a 1991 Ti td42 with Safari turbo. 1630000km and pretty much immaculate. Paid $17,000 Belonged to an old couple who had owned it since almost new and really looked after it. I was the first to look at it when it was advertised and bought it for the asking price on the spot. I paid a deposit and when I went back with the bank cheque to pick it up he had an A4 sheet of names and numbers of people who had rung up about it after me. One guy offered him $1000 extra to sell it to him instead of me!

I see you are in Perth, there was a couple in todays Sunday times that seemed allright for not bad money, also saw one in a yard at Midland - Exchange Cars for $14400 - diesel but dont know how many km's - a maverick i think, looked good just driving past, black in colour only prob.

Keep looking there are always tidy ones out there, if you find one though dont mess around as someone else will buy it

Hi Robster, try looking at the maverick they usually sell for a couple of grand cheaper and the only difference is the badging you should get one in the late 80s for your price range. Col

What years do the maverick run from 19?? - 19?? & is the 4.2 diesel engine and all driving mechanicals all the same. From what you've said about being only a rebaged nissan patrol, i've also heard ford modified interior parts, but if none of the mechanicals changed, then this sounds like a better option for my money, even if it is a ford...

Hi Robster, dont quote me but i think they go from 1988- to 93 94. All the running gear and motor are the same, havnt noticed any changes inside, funny how a badge name can lower the value of a vehicle, same thing happened on the commodore with a lexen badge. Col
