I was thinking of purchasing this app and checked the online comments from previous purchasers. It appears that for $150 you only get the same maps that are in the HEMA atlas and that if you want greater detail you have to pay another $150 for each state. This seems amazingly poor value. Have I misunderstood something?

What have people found is the best map option for travelling in the outback? This year we are just planning to tour the Channel Country, but next year are planning to travel across the Kimberleys. When sailing across oceans I always had the paper charts and would not rely on electronic charts.

We purchased the app for our outback trip last year and it was excellent for all parts of the trip even across the Simpson Desert. Just checked we have 75 maps and only paid the first price.

If you go to maps, then select digital map shop to search for other maps at that location you are looking at, you can download more with a 10 day free license to use that specific map.

Never paid a cent more than the original purchase price.

Overall very happy and a great deal.

Hi Brett
I don't quite follow what you wrote. Go to "maps" where? In the Ipad app? What are the maps you download for 10 days trial? are they large scale?

The outback maps in the HEMA atlas are quite small scale and I understand that what you get for $150 in the Ipad app are the same as in the atlas.

Hi Peter,

All maps on the Hema and others are essentially digital copies of paper maps I believe.

You get about 75 maps included in the price.

If there are other maps available in that area that you don't have preloaded, you go into the map file, and select maps from digital store. Hema then gives you 10 Day license for free to download and use these maps. Have used a number of these extra maps in Vic and NT.

I am happy with my Hema, and changed from a Hn5i.

You could always wait for when oziexplorer app and have access to more maps. The extra maps I had on oziexplorer were dated, whereas the Hema is more up to date.

Hello Guys

changing subject slightly...

Out of curiosity (and because I am currently feeling lazy) does the Hema Ipad map set include 250K Natmap (or at least Hema's version of same thing)? Also is it possible to make/convert and use you own maps e.g. scan/calibrate/convert-> import to ipad?

Cheers
Greg

Greg,

Screen shot of maps in my area.

You can't add your own maps.

G'day Guys.

What you get with the Hema 4WD maps app is the full range of Hema digital mapping. (The app description has a full list available). This is essentially our paper maps in a Digital format.

The additional mapping that people are referring to are the 1:25 000 scale topographical maps. These are only available in selected areas and need to be purchased state by state.

Safe Journey...
