Xmas In Alice

Hi All,

Can anyone tell me the condition of the Road (Red Centre Way) from Kings Canyon around to Alice as we were thinking of taking our caravan through there around new years? Cheers Damo

The road is good but can be very corrugated in spots, asking now for 5 months time is like choosing the Xlotto numbers.

Whether you get damage from driving this road depends on your caravans build quality.

Thanks for comment, i know the conditions will change, but with it being an alteranitve route to Alice do they maintain the road at all, sound like i might have to go the long way round.

If there around new year it will be Blxxdy Hot, not a place or a time you need to experience trouble. Think much lower speeds and lower tyre pressures too, travel dependent on the type of van it is.

The condition of the road is just one factor.

I passed through the Alice at Christmas time a few years ago and the temp was in the mid 40's. Not the sort of temp to go sight seeing.

Hi Damo and Trace

The Mereenie Loop is notorious and even after grading it is still not good. Unless you have a dedicated off roader (rough roader) caravan, don't risk it. Also bear in mind that the walks at places like Kings Canyon, Uluru and and Kata Yjuta close when the temperature reaches a certain level.

Don't say they are shutting down the canyon walk in hot weather now too?

Maybe I am remembering wrong Hairy, but I thought when we were there in 2008 it was liable to be closed in hot weather. Was that not correct?

You are probably right Hairy

It is a climb we started early to avoid the heat in winter - I wouldn't want to tackle that climb in summer, open or not. I was the best of the Central Australian walks we took though.
