Hi Christine
Plenty in between
Brisbane and
Birdsville that is of interest, but perhaps it might be good to give the
forum some idea on how much time you have, and what sort of things you would like to see; travelling in a group etc.
I mean, going to Birsdville via the
Kimberley’s would be an interesting way to get to
Birdsville, if you have the time (tongue-in-cheek!)...
Enjoy!

If your leaving Tuesday the 3rd? The races start Friday 6th. I would say go the quickest way possible & take your time coming
home.

Take a break at
Deon's Lookout. A short side road on the left just before the
Betoota bypass.
Excellent
views over the country you are travelling through.
Daby -
Roma -
Charleville -
Quilpie -
Windorah -
Birdsville
It is Bitumen out to about 50km (I think) past
Windorah to where the
Birdsville road turnoff is.

Alan,
Just over 100 clicks.to turnoff, from
Windorah. You must have been enjoying the scenery? Or the "serenity of it all". :-)
Bob.

we headed out to
Birdsville recently, if you checkout the trip report i have done it'll give you an idea of a possible route you could take http://
forum.themotleycrew.com.au/index.php?topic=1466.0
as mentioned above already....it really depends on just when you want to arrive in
Birdsville though as to a suitable route to take and how many klms a day your likely willing to drive. the route we did on our trip is certainly a lot more interesting then going straight out on the highway via
Roma and
Windorah etc, but time frame might not suit your arrival time in
Birdsville though.

Christine,
Be prepared to eat some dust once you leave the bitumen. I was just talking to a bloke who is going this year and he has fitted a pre filter to his
snorkel as last time he went his air filter was completely filled with red dust when he checked it at
Birdsville. He was amazed that it would let any air through.
He said that there was a constant stream of traffic going out and on the dirt road, approx one car per km, to let the dust settle a bit.
Right idea to take your time going
home. Most of the little towns along the way are trying to attract tourists and will have their points of interest, just ask a local.
Also heard on the tv last night that they are expecting 37 degrees on race day.
