I was wondering if any of you were able to give me some advice;
My partner and I were planning a trip to Victoria leaving the 14th of Dec as we both have done the Nullarbor several times we thought we would try something different.
Our original plan was to go home via the great central road down through coober pedy to Adelaide and across to Melbourne, we are taking our 2 dogs both heelers.
Is this trek out of the question at this time of year and would we be better off heading to SA then up to coober pedy and back the Oodnadatta track for something a bit different.

We have a 4WD and are not taking a trailer.

There doesn't seem to be any insurmountable reason that you could not take the route
mentioned. You will be aware that it may be quite hot in Dec. Both roads are not
difficult, barring rain, but may be rough/corrugated, & you may not have much company at that time of year. You need good tyres & aircon..cheers.....oldbaz.

Yes I reckon "Quite Hot" is probably a understating it a bit. Flaming hot or bloody hot might be a more accurate description! :-)

I understand it will be hot as i used to work in the Kimberlies, was more of a question to anyone that may have taken that route at that time of the year especially with the dogs

About a month ago a party of us went down the Birdsville track and up the Oodnadatta track down to Port Augusta via Coober Pedy.
After this a motor home and a 1976 Volvo ex tourist bus without much clearance and after doing the above trip then went to Uluru and went across the GCR. I have no reports if they got there or not but the bus had done it three times before.

No worries at all, only thing you'll need to watch is the rain. If it's wet, be prepared to sit and wait a couple days for the road to open, so if you have the time, then it wouldn't be a problem at all. Plenty of people still drive up and down the road at that time of year.

Cheers
