Hi everyone,

It's a long time since we have driven up the bitumen from Adelaide to Alice Springs. We don't want to do huge days driving (more than 500-600kms in a day) and don't intend to do any sight seeing. Last time we did this we stopped at Glendambo overnight and it was awful. We are set up to bush camp with a Troopy and a Trak Topaz, so we don't need a caravan park. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Before you ask, we are going up there to explore the East and West MacDonnells and are coming down the Oodnadatta Track etc - the trip up is just transit.

Thanks in advance for your help.
Cheers
Anni

There are plenty of rest areas on the Stuart Highway for overnight camping - consult any travellers' map for that region - they all come up on our Hema Navigator and they are all in Camps Australia Wide.... you'll have company after 4pm. Some have toilets - some not. We did the reverse - went up the Oodnadatta track and then explored the east and west Macs starting 7 weeks ago - back down the Stuart - all quality touring...... it was a bit too warm up there for us at times - still in the 35's now. We have used the Desert Oaks rest area 32k north of Erldunda and the Lake Hart rest area west of Pimba - both good spots. As for the middle region - north and south of Marla, there are heaps of places where you can simply pull off the highway and drive into the sparse scrub for a good camp - you'll see lots of tracks from prior campers having done the same (don't go in far though - pastoral leases).

Out of Adelaide, try the Lake Hart region, past Pimba.
Then, north of Coober Pedy, try Pootnoora channels. From memory, there are 3. All OK to free camp at.
The Marryat (River) near the border.
Also try heading east out of Kulgera, or a little south of that, west along the Victory Downs-Mulga Park Rd.
South of Alice Springs, yes, Desert Oaks (gunna be very crowded in winter touring season & close to the highway so you'll hear the road trains all night) - or even the Hugh River Stock Route or Stuart's Well, a mere 90 km from Alice Springs.

Cheers
