Howdy,
My brother just took delivery of a second-hand SR and wants to add some accessories on to it, so i figured asking for a bit of help from those with experience would be beneficial.
1. He wants to add spotlights, but also has an interest in LED bars.. My own opinion of these things is that they're good for short distances, but beyond that they aren't much use and a waste of money. Things may have changed recently with their power though.
- His plan: Two spotlights + a light-bar in the middle - $1200 budget... Any recommendations?
2. He's interested in an ARB bullbar, he knows someone at the
shop so they'd help him out with that, but are they still a decent company to buy from?
3. GME 80 channel two-way radios, has anyone had problems with these?
4. Any specific things that should be adjusted/fixed/looked into with this ute? From memory it's a 2011 model.
I'm happy to hear of any other things to add, but i don't really want to recommend stuff that would just make it look tacky.
Thanks,
Marc

Marc M,
1. LED bars are old hat and CREE diodes are now the go... (just like iPhones, there be another one released soon).
Reality, light bars are fine, but the biggest issue with all lighting, Spots, LED, HID is when you dip and go back to the mediocre original lights. This is the first place to start. You don't need HID, HIR Globes will make a big difference.
Spots or LED bars are next, but please not on the roof.
Some spots and LEDs are so
bright that oncoming vehicles lights just can be seen, so the poor driver other that car gets his retinas burnt out. In particular over slight rises in the road with LEDs on the roof.
2. ARB, Ironman, TJM all make good bars , as ARB are mostly franchises, no one can comment if the store your are talking about is decent to deal with.
3. GME radios, in car units are made in Australia, I have GME and like most no issues with the product., Make sure you have a decent antenna.
4. The Hilux is a
well proven truck and has no major issue.

Hi mate I actually won a 2012 hilux sr fully kitted out, it has a 80 channel uniden UHF which is mounted behind the dash and all controls and speaker are on the hand piece it's a great radio and doesn't clutter or take up any room on your dash, it has a arb winch delux bullbar which is very nice too! Not sure where you are but ultimate 4wd in canning vale wa fitted out
mine and did a great job!

If you pop over to Newhilux.net you will get all the info you need
I think the ARB bars are still the best available but you will pay more for them, I had one on my Hilux.

have you considered upgrading the main lights to HID to start with
I have set of the old hella 100 series lights with HID globes conversion
Now I often go down to
Adelaide and often return back to
Broken Hill at night
we have many
long flat sections of hwy and they work a treat
I see so many spend a fortune on lights but rarely use them so my limited advice is for people to think long and hard about what you want and where they plan on driving
some of the new round HID ones with a lot of globes are fantastic for driving in windy or hilly country where you need light a short distance
but out here
Broken Hill and other
places that are flat and wide open you need a different type of light set up
I noticed a huge increase on the number of roos on our last trip few weeks back and in the paper the other day they said there is a 16% increase in roos in this part of the country
sorry for waffling on but some food for thought before spending a lot of money

illegal for road use for
driving lights .

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. Seems a little strange that i can post a thread but not reply to it for 2 days...
Bludge - I'll have a look into the HIR globes as you've said, and no the spotlights would go on the bullbar.. Do you have any picks of brands to use for spotties? I'd say go with just the globes, but he's fixated on it.
Any experience with lightbars?
Jacent - You won a Hilux? I thought those car winning things were a myth :p
Currently in Vic, but thanks for that.
Alby - Yeah he seems keen on ARB so if he wants to pay for it than that's his problem.
Allein - I think he just wants the look of the lights on the front to be honest, but changing the globes is something i'll be recommending anyway.
With the FYR LYT spotties, have you tried them out? What kind of prices are they?
That thread you attached does seem a little spammy and suss with regards to recommending them, but they do have decent stuff.
And Pete - No, i was not aware that they weren't allowed for driving but i do now.
Thanks for that.
