Turbo Diesel Hilux Fuel Economy

On a recent 8K desert trip I was able to return 11.9 ltr per 100, fully loaded. Economy seems to suffer at highway speeds but is quite good chugging around. CheersButcher Country Track - Vic

maybe even just check your air and fuel filters. they can also affect your economy when they need changing.....

My 3.0TD surf 1995 model (same motor as yours) was a little dissapointing to me also, I came from a 2.8TD Rocky (similar to hilux motor) and got fantastic economy, not as much power mind you, the Surf chews fuel. Mind you I go a lot faster now, so I guess thats why...

Hi Bushfox. Our trip was Glenbambo and down Goog's track, across to Eucla and up north from there to Forrest and across the transAust rail line to Rawlina. From there up the Connie Sue Hwy to Neale junction, across to Wiluna via the Heather Hwy and across the Gunbarrel inc the abandoned section, around the loop from the rock and into Alice then down the Oodnadatta track to Andamooka (got a shack there) and back to melb. Staked one tyre and lost an IPF light otherwise not a problem in the world. Very happy with how robust the hilux is. Off up into the snowy this weekend. Canning with bikes due May/June 2005. Probably have a TD troopie by then however. CheersButcher Country Track - Vic

Its your tyres.
Firstly, By fitting the 31x10.5R15 (diameter 778mm) they are 34mm greater diameter than the standard 205R16 (dia 744mm) and 45mm greater than the optional 255/70R15 (733mm). Thats 4.5% - 6% difference. Need to factor that into your mileage and the gearing is also affected.
Secondly, Muddies use more fuel than H/T tyres (greater rolling resistance).
Thirdly, Fat tyres use more fuel than skinny tyres.

I have a 2003 TD hilux, just clocked 20,000km, with ARB bullbar, rear bar, side steps, snorkell and carryboy canopy (heaviest canopy on the market but looks great).
With all these extras and standard highway tyres I was getting 10 litres/100km (10km/litre). After fitting BFG All Terrains I now get 11-11.5 litres/100km (8.5-9km/litre). Though the speedo/odometer is now inaccurate due to bigger diameter tyres. Using my GPS to calculate a 6% innacuracy means the 11-11.5 litres is per 106km travelled not 100km. I then do my sums and the result is 10.4-10.8 litres/100km (9.2-9.6 km/litre).
These figures are for city driving with 40 psi in the tyres and offroad the fuel consumption can increase up to double.
You could try to find your speedo/odometer inaccuracy to calculate the true consumption figures.
