Bob,

Check out thread 105358, plenty of discussion about KI, from 3rd Dec, 2013.

KI must have to be the most expensive sea voyage on the planet. Short distance and high cost

I wonder why this is?
And if it is so expensive (for the service they provide), why someone else doesn't come in with an alternative and undercut them?

Several have & their businesses have failed. There is another one in the pipeline ATM.

Exactly!

Backstairs Passage is a very tricky bit of water, with a strong currents and often strong winds (sea breezes) over tide, resulting in short, sharp and uncomfortable seas. Unlike the Sorento / Queenscliff ferry which sails in protected waters and to which it is often compared, passages can sometimes take considerably longer than the scheduled time. Vehicles often have to be secured to the deck rather than just drive on / off with no delay. At times the service has to be delayed or cancelled because of bad weather. The vessels have to be built to withstand the tough conditions and operated accordingly. Of course, on many occasions, the water is smooth and people have an enjoyable (and sea sick free) passage!
All this costs money that has to be recouped through the fare structure.

As you state KevinE, there have been many attempts to establish a viable competitive service and they have failed - at least so far.

I tend to look at the cost of the ferry this way. I can take the ferry to KI and return at a cost of $600 or so - or I can drive 300kms to another destination and back again. The cost of travel is approx. the same.

Cheers
Andrew

PS No affiliation with the ferry operator nor tourism on KI.

I see that you & I are on the same page Andrew! :)

We've been several times & love it over there! I personally don't think it's all that expensive.

As long as the state & federal governments fail to support the crossing as they should, it will remain a privately operated business & businesses exist to make a profit.

Supply & demand dictate price; there's only one ferry service operating & they are not short of customers! Especially cashed up tourists from overseas.

Cheers,

Kevin.

Could possibly be cheaper to leave the caravan on the mainland and stay in booked accommodation on the island, from what I've heard Sea Link don't miss for their (Caravan's) transport. Just a thought.

The cost of the fare depends on the length of caravan, if you book for one night or more on a deal called Self Drive the accomd is cheaper. To take the caravan over is $711.60, booking for caravan and 2 nights stay $716.60 only $6.00 extra, can,t work that out, maybe they own the caravan parks, also does any one know of any bush camps outside Adelaide. I am a Veteran and were told of a couple of Reyreats around area, so far have not been able to find them. Bob k

For national parks in SA follow this link. http://www.environment.sa.gov.au/parks/home
Not all parks are open to camping, but some within coo-ee of Adelaide are. Fees apply. All the info you need is in the web site.
If you wanted power sites then Belair caravan park (in the Belair National Park) is not too dear and is OK to stay at. Also powered sites at Brownhill Creek caravan park at BH Creek National Park, but I have never stayed there so can not comment on it. Good luck with your trip.

Hi Bob

Firstly Bob with only 2 nights on the Island, you will see northing. Sure the Island looks small, but there are over 1600 kilometres of good roads over on the island, and many of the back roads have some great scenery and often out of the way places to see.

The dearest part of the trip would be taking your van to the Island, and everything that goes over is means tested on its length. If you insist on taking your van over, then make it a 2 week trips, and even then you will not see every part of the Island.

Usually with Sealink if you book your return trip and a minimum of 1 nights accommodation which includes Caravan Parks, you will get a discounted fare.

The are 3 privately run Caravan Parks on the Island, Penneshaw, Kingscote and Western KI. As well as these there are a number of Council run accommodation stops as well as a number of great out of the way spots to stay on the Island.

To give you an idea of what there is to see on the Island, here are a few Blogs that I have done for Kangaroo Island.

Shackle Road Drive

A Perfect Holiday Destination

South Australia's Forgotten Destination

These Wildflowers should be in Bloom in April

Many complain about the cost of getting there, but I ask them this one very question........have they been to the Island to see what is there??

Cheers

I agree with Stephen. You need more than 2 nights because of the distances to the touristy type sites. At least 3 to 4 nights and even then you would be flat out fitting most attractions in and would have little time to relax. To take the van over for 2 nights is not worth it. But if you do not take it over then leave it at Cape Jervis Station where it would be safe. http://capejervisstation.com.au/. You should be able to get self contained accommodation on the island for $200.00 to $250.00 a night. Check out this link for accommodation. http://www.agoda.com/en-au/pages/agoda/default/DestinationSearchResult.aspx?asq=vUT54yz6ZB332JlcWccdo%2fBMUeYRWtQUGMbRwPy%2b1Cf1junpjH9QaMFnpg60a3ld2wGDOX4oN8QjEPRSQ6PaJch%2bn3QHzsehpxMjb3GBvuvnvmSpa6scgyJOb9cjK00EqAe%2bVtvZlaWiTNhkuGeXdJLwCHD1QPD8q%2fF0GCGig%2f%2byMf1q2Xdn8yvM41cFxZEcv%2bqrUHgRdiP3VCL%2bu5jl%2fynM4jtzg5j5Is8GJLKcuedx5%2bhBXfnBbA8nGGxWH3Ryrf%2fUNkZhsJBVKRm%2fmwHav2SGegCCvMC1aaB3PF67Iic%3d&tick=635239348377
Best to stay centrally on the island to cut down on travelling distances and time. Kingscote area is central. Most of the touristy type places are West of Penneshaw. Another suggestion. Stay at Victor Harbor (where I live) and take a coach tour of the island from Victor Harbor. Long day, about 15 hours, but could be a viable alternative.
RAA handle bookings.

Maisie K. Hi I live in this area and the best time to travel to Kangaroo Island is on the first Sunday of the month. There is a farmers market at Penneshaw which is sponsored by Sealink. They give a discount for foot traffic on this day but they still do not give a discount on taking your vehicle & caravan. You maybe better off leaving your caravan on the mainland.
When you book you will have ask the discount for the farmers market as they will not offer it to you. Best of luck dealing with this mob.

Cheers

Members gave great advice when I went a couple of months ago. Left van for $5 a day at Cape Jervis & took Prado for 11 days. Did just under 1,000kms & still didn't see everything.
Asking for Seniors discount on the ferry & booking return with 2 nights in their accommodation seems to be cheapest way to go. On arrival buy a Parks Pass & stay in some of their accommodation options as well. Western KI Caravan Park has cottages so base yourself there for a few days & then again near Kingscote.
Don't miss Wills Rare Breeds Farm for a fascinating look at the fast disappearing old breeds of farm animals.
Cheers Heather

The farmers market deal is for one day only, and you will not see much without a vehicle.

Heather, re the Parks Pass, What does it cost, we are looking at staying on KI for say 10 days and what are the benefits, I do not want to pay for a 3 monthly or yearly pass.

Thanks
