G'day all,
A friend is looking for a full sized wagon and likes the G U Patrol for toughness, size and reputation. The one in his price range is dual fuel and should have plenty of power from its 4500 engine even on gas.Do these vehicles run well on gas?
Are they reliable or is it better to keep saving the extra five grand for the diesel .
Thanks in advance mark

Marcus,
Advise him to hang on for an oiler......it'll be worth it.
I've had both. My 1st 4x4 was a 1990 Maverick. I ran it from new on petrol and then coverted it to dual fuel and finally to gas only. It ran better on gas only (totally new carbie set up) but range was severly limited to about 300klm safe from the 100 litres I could carry @ 80% cut-off. That meant I couldn't hit the back blocks at all. I then bought a 1993 RX Diesel in 1995 and upgraded to my current 2000 GU 4.2T/D in 2000.
I could NEVER go back to a petrol 4x4 again.
Just my opinion.
Cheers
Roachie

Mate and I went for a drive in his tonight to get my tires.

Goes well, but in his words, a 350 Chev would be cheaper to run.....

Depends on what he wants to do and go.

Without doubt , the 4.5 GU is the best vehicle to run on gas. The limiting thing really is range. 300 odd K's out of gas, 150 or so with fuel. OK if your close to gas supply (which apart from the very backblocks you are).

Hell yeah they are reliable (they are a variation of the 4.2 Diesel anyway). They cruise all day, tow ANYTHING . Excellent vehicle.

I have a GU Ti 4.5.

Should you wait and buy a Diesel . . . well . . . to each their own. You wont be disappointed with a Patrol/Gas , and quite possibly its cheaper to run on gas then even diesel (given price, servicing etc) however , you cant bet the diesel for touring range (1000 odd K's from both tanks I believe).
