Would anyone know if the road between Meekatharra and Wiluna is okay to be crossed in a 2wd?

Am heading to Kalgoorlie once we leave Newman and this is the most convenient looking access across to the Goldfields Hwy. Any suggestion would be appreciated =)

under normal conditions I believe so but currently there's a lot of roads that have been damaged or are closed from heavy rains. Check with Main Roads on that one.

Check the www.vks737.on.net site .... there's a link at the front to a WA roads page
(maintained regularly by one of their members).I need red sand under me.

Also read our Road Conditions it is updated at least twice a week. We use a lot of the info from the vks page and have our own government sources for all locations. Regards

Thankyou to all =)

I went to the Main Roads site and it said that stretch of road was in the Kalgoorlie-Goldfields report, however when I went to that report it just had tourist info nothing on the roads.

The link on the HF radio page to the WA roads wouldn't come up for me at all, will try again later.

I read through the Road Conditions report here at Exploroz. I am figuring it is in the area of report for the Nippon Highway and Sandstone to get across to Goldfields Hwy but I am not sure so if someone could clarify that would really be appreciated. I have a Hema map and while it has lots of info on it it doesn't have the actual name of the stretch of road between Meekatharra and Wiluna so I'm not sure exactly what I am looking for.

We are going there mid March so hoping it will have cleared up but if the conditions are no good then will just find another way across!

Thanks for help so far is making my life a little less complicated =)

If you are going from Newman to Kalgoolie you can shortcut thru Canyu road to Wiluna from south of Kumarina Motel/roadhouse.Saves about 180 Km from memory as you only do 1 side of the triangle.
some old maps I had showed it as a private road but in July 02 when we were going Wiluna to Newman learnt that council had taken over maintenance of road. it was excellent and definitely 2wd standard. You could always check condition with Wiluna police station.

Hi Howard

I can see Canyu road marked on my map but it isn't marked private. I will call Wiluna as soon as I find the number and ask the Question. Thankyou =)

If you want bitumen the road from Mount Magnet through Sandstone is now sealed
Last time we did Leonora, Wiluna, Meekatharra was in commodore with no trouble - look out for stone throwers in Wiluna

My map is 02 and shows portions past Sandstone - Wiluna still unsealed. It's an extra 200km but if I am not sure of the other roads it's not much of a deviation to avoud getting bogged somewhere in the 2wd. Or maybe I should buy me a WRX =D =D

G'day,
if you are coming from the south cut through Sandstone from Paynes Find - its dirt, but a much better road in my experience than the Meekatharra-Wiluna road
Cheers,
Alex
