I feel that you would be cutting it too short , there are plenty of things to do while at Coober Pedy, it is a very interesting place .

Thanks John E, I tend to agree - what would you consider the top 3 "must do's"?

Sorry , I posted before I finished . Well , all of the things Robyn mentioned , and also a trip out to the Breakaways ,( a sort of mini painted desert )we also wouldn't miss a stay in an underground motel . We also did a flight over Lake Eyre , but there was a little water in it then . We were there because of a broken A frame on the previous van , and we had the absolute best service both from the tow truck driver( Tony ), and a whiz of a welder ,(sorry his name escapes me) , who went far beyond all expectations to help us to get back on the road . cheers.

Amongst the many things listed here a place we Don't recommend is the, Ummm, Opal place that sounds like the Moon (? main drag on the left )
SWMBO was ripped off with the quality of an Expensive Opal Ring, supposed to be A grade , turned out to be a layered bleep e thing, that cracked across the surface
When the ring was sent back for repair / replacement via mail the abuse started .
She was even accused of lying about how it was damaged ( only used as a dress ring, so not an everyday wearer )
This from a supposedly reputable seller / manufacturer was a bit much !!!!
Seemed to us that the attitude was , your from WA and you'll never be back ( but we will ) so do your worst ..........
We're so disappointed we promised him that we will NEVER recommend his Cave place to anyone.
His comment .........................?

It's been a few years now but we had to do a few days more than we'd planned in Coober Pedy when our motor bike broke down (the only mechanic who knew about motor bikes was in Adelaide for the week!).
It was great fun!
Poke into the supermarket (you could buy all the usual stuff plus dynamite!). Check out the opal shops-very interesting to learn about the folk who live there. Go on a tour of an underground house and see how they live (when they need a new room, they just dig a bit more!). Visit the underground church (fascinating!). Hang out in the underground bar. Drive around the back streets (we found a huge building project that had been abandoned and we've spent "since then" wondering what it was and whether it resumed!). Go noodling for opal scraps (we found what we call "a milkshake worth"). Go up to the lookout where the big metal tree is -there was a sign on the empty ground below telling of the house that stood there...until they discovered many dollars worth of opal and decided that perhaps the house could go!!
We stayed in an underground motel and still marvel at how dark it was when we turned out the bathroom light!
It's like no other.
Happy travels.
:)

There is a great Greek restaurant in the main street. We were there in Oct 2012 and the food was fabulous.

Liked the town.............. didn't enjoy the people.
I understand 90% of the worlds opals are mined in Coober Pedy & with the exception of the Caravan Park staff & the odd underground jewellery store we browsed through, the way we were treated by locals you would have thought my wife & I were out to steal what opals remain.

Been there once, have no intention of returning.

I've been dying to say something like that, it is a bit like Oodnadatta, you either like it or hate it, I don't like either!
