I am looking at putting electric drums on my c/trailer and have found on e-bay an axle and brakes for $440. This sound alright to u all in the know. Also what is the correct way to measure my existing axle as to order the right one. Thanks in advance.

It might be safer to ask the vendor how they measure them!

When I bought a new braked axle (simple over-run disk brakes) for my CT years ago I was asked to measure centre of tread to centre of tread.

When replacing mine it was measured from tip to tip and which hubs it has.

I see a minefield developing.

I recently bought an override brake kit and heavy duty axle for my box trailer. My vendor wanted overall length of axle - tip to tip.

I suggest as I did, contact them first and find what they want - just to prevent any misunderstanding.

Cheers

Petza mate.....the can of worms is there and will get epened sooner or later.
Best open it and get it dealt with.

First if you want a good set of brakes you need to be considering brand......so you want a good set or do you want cheap.
Dexter or one of the other reputable brands OR cheap chinese crackers.

Second the length of the axle depends on a number of things.

If you have an existing axle and the width is appropriate you are safest working off the flange to flange measurement.

things that will influence axle length

the type of bearing and hub system
the clearance of the tyres from the body
the offset of the rims
the width of the tyres.

If you go to a good supplier they should give you all the help you need.

cheers

Bantam! I went through this a few years back and I was wondering if I should open the can. I'm glad I didn't, you're doing great so far! Great advice! Michael
