Last year we travelled the GCR (with our two permits) from
Laverton to Ayres
Rock and on to the Alice, we stayed one night at
Curtin Springs Station, during our evening meal the subject came up about permits for the GCR, and the people from Curtain Springs Station said that you do not need a permit to travel along the GCR, ONLY if you are going off the road any distance eg 40metres either side of the road, are they correct.?

I don't think that is correct. 2 yrs ago we travelled from Uluru to
Laverton, via the GCR.
When we reached the
check point gates, on the way to Ayers
Rock, they wanted to charge us a fee before we could proceed on.
I told them that we were only passing through on our way back to WA.
They then asked to see our permit to travel along the GCR.
We did have a permit so they let us continue without charging a further fee.
If we did not have a permit we would not have been allowed to continue on unless we paid the Ayers
Rock access fee.
In any case, phone the relevant communities for further information re permits, I think you need 2 permits. Cheers and good luck.

Exactly what happened with us a year ago. Permits are not hard to get and cost nothing from memory.

The information you got from
Curtin Springs is most definitely incorrect. You do need permits to travel the GCR.
Cheers
