Wondered why the fridge in my Van had no go on 12 v if supplied from the vehicle but runs ok if 12v is supplied via the 240 v transformer in the van. Traced the problem to the earth wire on the Jackeroo wiring. The earth wire was very thin and couldn't handle the current. replaced it with wire the same guage as the 12 v supply and it works fine.

I think it's fair to say that 9 times out of 10 with 12V wiring it's the earth that'll give you grief.
