Serioulsy if you are concerned about reception..samsung seems to have it at the moment.

I run a pissy little galaxy ace pluss.....$150 outright phone...the smallest version of the galaxy range.

Time after time I find I have reception where others don't or struggle...well it is a blue tick phone.

cheers

I have someone here at Kilcowera now who has a Samsung S4, the reception for this phone here is totally crappy! I sure wouldn't buy one.

Yes and Yes, she bought it specifically for those reasons and the fact she was coming to visit us here. Toni

Iphone 4S is supposed to be better than the newer Iphone 5, I use the 4s now and even in lower signal area's seems ok.
Just came across the Nullabor and was quite amazed at where we actually got coverage, but I think Telstra have opened up some new towers along there.

My daughter has the Iphone 5 but with a different carrier so cannot really do a side by side comparison.

My daughter has the new I Phone 5, my years old Nokia C5 runs rings around it as far as reception is concerned, All the hype about Apple doesn't seem to add up to me.

I think you have one of the best reception phones around. Definitely better than later Iphones.

The Kondinin group do a very comprehensive test on Next g phones every year. They test about 20 phone's reception in many remote conditions and express the result out of 100.

In 2012 the Iphone 4s got 93, equal third best, in 2013 all the iphone 5 could manage was 84. Way behind.

They are well researched reports, only the

Got to love people who don't look at the WHOLE picture, the Iphone rated equal 4th out of twenty phones and only just missed coming third by a a few points....... yes way behind WHAT?

To say it doesn't receive as good as the 4S is like saying a 200 series landcruiser isn't as good as a 60 series in .00001% of off roading but is better in every other aspect.

If you look at the durability numbers the phone that came 2nd only got a score of 50 out of 100 and the phone that came in third could only get a score of 75 out of 100 with sound quality 9 points behind the iPhone....... the iPhone got 100 out of 100 for durability.

No use having a phone with the best reception iif the durability isn't their and you can't make phone calls because it had failed.

It would of been nice for them to print what criteria and parameters they used to obtain this data and what the difference was in measurable units .... was the winning phone 5cm's, 5m's or 5km's better.

We have two iPhone 5's and the reception between the two is different but not one is better then the other.

If they used the iPhone 4s in place of the 5 where would of scored ?...... you have to remember the 4s was judged along with the current phones of that time so the score it obtained can not be used as proof it is any better then the iPhone 5.

Not sure of your point olcoolone.

The OP asked about a replacement with good reception for his IPhone 4s. My post was simply to highlight the research that compares bluetooth phones. I highlighted that the Iphone 5 gets a score of 84 verses 93 for the previous model.

The OP didn't ask about durability, quality, colour or any other parameter you choose to raise to include the "whole picture". Only you are raising those points ahich are apparently important in your mind to you.

Gees this forum is getting worse for people answering questions no one ever asked. It's getting harder to try to help without criticism from unrelated parties.

Not sure of my point....... your comparing one survey done on old phones and comparing those figures with another survey on new phones done at different times.

The numbers quoted would only be relevant to the other phones tested at the same time or if they revisited the old and new phones and carried out the same tests at the same time..... and if the 4s out scored the 5s today then I would say the 4s is better.

So if a 60 series got a overall score of 55 points 30 years ago and the new 200 series got a score of 40 points yesterday does that mean the 200 series is worse and not worth considering now.... but if you were to compare a 30 year old 60 series in new condition today against a 200 series today that would be a true and fair comparison.

Yes the forum is getting worse when someone uses old data and tries to compare it with new current data.... sure your comparing apples with apples but of different variety and season!

Olcoolone, please take the time to read the test methodology. The score for reception is carefully done in a test environment that is consistent year to year. The reception scores are absolute and not relative to other phones in a particular year, or other years. Any particular phone would get the same score regardless of when is is tested. They do it that way so you CAN compare phones in previous tests which may still be available, like the 4s!

If you read the later report they also mention that the Iphone 5 has worse reception than the 4s.

I'm not sure of the relevance of the 60 series and 200 series. What I do know is that the OP asked about phone recption in a new phone and I was highlighting a report that could help him. Given he was upgrading from a 4s, he may chose a 5 assuming that it has equivalent or better reception, but it doesn't.

If he upgrades from a 60 series to a 200 then I am sure your input would have some value then.

Should send some of these new phones to us to test. Soon tell them what works and what doesn't.

Actually they should send as any new gadget to test. Soon tell the makers how things work in the real world.

Yeap being 4 wheel drive you have to be so skilled and an expert in so many disciplines with years of study and research ( and what you don't know Google will help) we should all get diplomas in every thing man has every done or is going to do...... it should be automatic, something new is discovered and two days later we should get a diploma for that in the mail......

Man walked on the Moon in the 60's..... we were walking on Mars in the 50's sleeping in our uninvented roof top tents driving around with tyres pressures at 17 inches of mercury.

Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin in 1928 and we had it in our 4 wheel drive first aid kits 8 years before.

In1891 Richard Hornsby and his two Sons, were playing around with the first known internal combustion engine to use fuel injection..... 4 wheel drivers were already converting used Cobb and Co coaches over before then!

What will the next 100 years hold?

And are we going to be able to sustain so many experts on one planet?

I have found in my personal experience that our Samsung's perform far better in the Bunbury region than the Iphones, so much so that the whole family switched over.

Judging by the varied responses it could depend on alot of variables though, best bet would be get some friends around and test it yourself.

However if you wanted my actual opinion I'd go with Samsung over the Iphone

The wife and I both have a 4s phone each and the son has Iphone 3 we also have 2 Ipads, we have travelled around Australia using them with no problems, to me a phone is a phone is a phone.

Just remember 30 years ago we didn't have these reception problems we have today so for the sake of a kilometre or 2 in between reception areas of different phones, I would think that there might be bigger things in life to worry about.

Have a nice trip.

Main reason not to go for 4S over a newer iphone for me would be the lack of 4G internet. If you wanted one of the newer iphones then I'd look at the 5C because it's blue tick, better reception than 5S due to plastic case.

My Husband has a 4S and reception seems pretty good, but my Lumia 720 seems just as good.

When people talk about iPhone 5 I'm not sure if it's a blanket term for iPhone 5, 5S and 5C

Every time there’s a new iPhone, people line up worldwide, waiting outside Apple stores, sometimes for days, to be among the first to get it. It’s the height of stupidity; the phone isn’t any different a few days later. Furthermore, if one waits about a year, it gets cheaper and the bugs in the darn thing haven’t even been discovered yet.

Well, have purchased the 4s Apple iPhone & am happy with it.Thank you to all replies. Have a better reception than my old Samsung..2-3 bars instead of 1.Have connected to my BP wireless network & have downloaded what apps I need. The Telstra shop doesn,t stock them but the Post Office does. Very happy !
