Is it possible to take the road/track down the coast from
Port Augusta to
Fitzgerald Bay or is access denied due to the forces training area ?

Hi Wicket,
It used to be a nice drive but that was back in the 70's the army has it closed off now as far as I know. The
Port Augusta council was attempting to get it open again but nothing has been heard about it for a while, pity.
Cheers
Graham
P.S. is your avatar a view from Mt Horrocks.

Hi Wicket,
We camped there at the water's edge, Christmas 1983 whilst I was working on the Santos Pt Bonython LPG plant. It was totally deserted and we saw no-one for the whole time. Idyllic.
Looking at it now on Google Earth there are permanent buildings and it seems to be accessible by a track from Pt Bonython Rd. near the Santos plant entrance.
This link may be helpful to you.

Actually Wicket, if you Google "
Fitzgerald Bay SA" there are a number of results with info.

Hi wicket
Got
home a week ago after spending 6 days at
Fitzgerald bay. One day we followed the dirt road north to Douglas Point ( point Douglas ) and there the track finished. It has been fenced off. An old snoozer we talked to said you used to be able to drive all the way to
Port Augusta but now they have closed the track. It certainly seems from the
Fitzgerald bay end you cant get through.
cheers mark

Have camped at
Fitzgerald Bay a couple of times but never driven too far up that road, was contemplating heading down from
Port Augusta but now looks that it will be the highway.
cheers .
