Dear Friends

I've problem with my Nissan Patrol 2002, 4.8L manual gears. The vehicle stopped in the middle of road and not moving at all. It is giving a grinding sound while the clutch is not pressed. All mechanics say that It's gears has been damaged.....

My Question is :-

I want to replace its gears with the gears of Nissan Patrol, manual, 2006, 4.5 L ?

Is it possible ? recommended ? or feasible ?

Any valuable suggestions shall be appreciated.

Kind Regards

Waqas

Safest thing would be to swap gearboxes...sounds like one of the shafts have failed...and there is nothing worse than to have chunks of metal pushed through the gears. Probably a lot of damage done... You would have to remove the gearbox and pull it apart anyway and from what I've heard that you will need three man to lift it. they are really heavy. You'd have to check that the gears are compatible. If you want to change boxes with an earlier one. Check the stud pattern, for the bell housing to mate with the block. measurements and fit for the spline to flywheel, yolk/uni joint compatibility and linkages/gear lever. and mountings.Check with a Nissan wreckers they should be able to tell you right away. Good luck. sounds expensive.

Best thing to do is check the part numbers of the complete gear box, if the last digit is out chances are it will be something minor like a electrical plug..... the further the part number has changed the more major it becomes.

Can't see Nissan like other manufactures doing major changes with the box from a 4.5 - 4.8.

Or the other thing is find a place who sells gear sets, if there part numbers are the same between to tow boxes chances are they are the same.

Its the input shaft....breaks just at the splines near the clutch plate...especially if its had a hard time apparently.
There is a thread on it in the Patrol forum...but I.m stuffed if I can find it atm.
Also from reports there...the gearbox out of a late ZD30 will fit ....just needs something removedaround near starter area of bell housing.

HTH

Cheers Keith
Nothin is ever the same once I own it ...........

There isn't a 2006 4.5 Waqas - , if 2006 you mean the last of the 4800 manuals.

The change would be ok , they are pretty tolerant , we broke another recently and the kids changed it easter sunday night , couldn't find the exact one so we used one from the 3 lt diesel , gears were close enough as car has extra power.

The box was very low km's think about $700 (came out of a CRD 3lt that had an engine blowup)

Ours just stopped , but on a serious hillside - it had broken its output drive shaft and made no noise - some have also stripped spline which could also make a noise.

Nothing to worry about from 2002 on uppy , they are seriously strong , thats why we use them.

Just 2 tips
1/ its was designed for 185kw , so don't put 400+ kw through them , thats why ours suffer.

2 , there are 2 rubber breather hoses that run under exhaust , they are easily torn off when having fun.

A/ Check regularly , as sucking water into the box isn't good.

B/ The metal pipes they connect to can be twisted and hoses shortend a little to put them more out of harms way.

C/ They like synthetic oil as well.

The torque of our 4.8 is well over 900nm and the gears are fine, but we have twisted an input shaft and snapped an output shaft when driving 37" tyres so you will have no issue guys.

Basically Mike its just a great big turbo running high Boost and 4" inlet / outlet system.

Uses a Haltech ECU which can have multiple maps , 1 of which effectivily disconnects the turbo and can run LPG also (keeps it legal in that mode).

Flywheel kw are 400 now (300 rw) which is down from what is was (450kw) as we couldn't afford the parts to keep the valves under control at over the limit revs.

I don't reccomend this to anyone as Nissan may be strong but its to easy to snap something somewhere in the drivetrain.

Its been interesting though , while this car is rough as guts and has a snappy 3 plate clutch we have compared it (getting up difficult places) to my daily driver 2010 auto 4800 and I have to say that brute force does take you further.

4.8 gearbox has unique gearing. you cannot use gears from any other patrol gearbox.
you would be better off replacing the entire gearbox. I use brand new genuine nissan ones in my race car. they are not stupidly priced.
