If it is a question then there are some by the Annan River at the
Cooktown end where you could do a spot of stealth camping.
To Cape Trib from
Cairns it is all private land where you would stand out a bit, from Cape Trib to Lions Den it is rainforest and you would be hard pressed to get off the road. There are a few spots at some creek crossings that come to mind where you could roll out a swag under the
NO CAMPING sign, just get going again before anyone comes through.

Go out the back of the Lion's Den. Good spot and does not cost that much.

If you are asking for campsites AlfMary, it may depend on whether you are camping out or have a self contained caravan or motorhome.
For
Cairns there is
free camping 60 kilometres south at
Babinda with two sites.
Cooktown has a 48 hour free
campsite but it is for self contained only, and furthermore units must have INBUILT
grey water tanks.

Thanks to all those who took the time to reply. I should have put my thread as a question. First timer.
We have set up our van for
free camping with a de touchable
grey water tank. We intend to travel up the east coast up to
Cooktown next year and then take our time coming back to
Wollongong.

The "free camp" in
Cooktown is run by the council and you must go to the council (mon-fri office hours) they will inspect your RV to make sure it is fully self contained and give you a permit for $5 per night per vehicle and you can only stay for 48 hrs.
As for "rolling out your swag under the no camping sign" it is this behavior that spoils it for everybody, the same as dropping
grey and black water "in the bush"
