Hi All,
Just wondering what Caravaners do with there about there water tanks in there vans when they return from there trips away. Is it better to empty them out or do they leave them full to prevent algae build up.
Cheers Steve

Yes, best left full Steve, although no light there should be no algae. We leave ours 'as they come home' and top up before leaving next time.

We leave ours with whatever water is in them when we return. Fill them as required, when required. Algae won't grow in a dark area such as a black caravan water tank. Ensure connecting hoses are also opaque.

We leave our water tanks as is, but I make sure I empty the hot water system tank so the anode is not anoding while we aren't travelling.

Do you empty hot water when travelling, ie. from site to site, say
over 200kms?

Thanks

No I don't Tony. We bush camp a lot and that would waste a lot of water.

It's just my OCD that compels me to empty the tank while the van is stored over summer, plus it's a good idea anyway.

I do drain the water tanks and HWS. The HWS to inspect and if necessary change the anode/cathode, and flush the tank.
I then re-fill the main tanks from our own household supply and leave until the next trip.
As others have said, no light should not let any little nasties grow in the tanks.

if you have filled up your water tanks from a doubtful source when you have travelled I would empty them out and fill up with town water containing clourine the clourine will kill all the bugs in the water not just the algae eg like water from a bore if you go from CP TO CP i would not worry about filling the tanks
