G'day davross
Does the alternator have an internal or external regulator??

If external, the wiring to the regulator may be faulty/dirty connector or the points in the regulator (which close when the alt is running) may be dirty and the current to turn off the globes is not getting through.

Generally the alternator's output cause the lights to go off and if there is no output despite the new brushes then the lights will stay on.

I think they had an external regulator.
Also if the wiring on the coaster is similar to the same vintage Landcruisers the blinker can is also in the charge circuit.
Also check the fusible links connected to the battery positive in the wiring harness as they eventually fail due to fatigue. Replacements can be made up by buying lengths of fusible link from a good auto electrician.

check the power feeds to the regulator there should be ign (white/red)
battery(white/) light(yellow) and of course earth(white /black)

Dave - A faulty diode in the alternator will mean the alternator light will glow dully at all times when the engine is running.

The filter light staying on is possibly a faulty warning switch in the filter assembly.
