If it doesn't rain it the tracks will be open but if it rains the tracks will be closed...... a lot can happen in 2 months especially in winter.

When travelling we always make alternative routes just in case as road conditions can vary greatly overnight...... what might be good today could be undriveable tomorrow and like it for weeks.

Maybe someone with a crystal ball can help?

I think you could punt a Falcon and a Jayco up that road.

The critical point to check conditions is Tibooburra. Last time we were there the parks office had posted reports from several states; the local copper can also give up to date advice or for a recorded msg covering NSW ring 08 8082 6660

For Qld contactBirdsville Wirrarri Information Centre 1300 794 257 or 07 4656 3300; Email: info@diamantina.qld.gov.au or discover@diamantina.qld.gov.au and some of the roads are covered by http://www.barcoo.qld.gov.au/planning-and-roads/48-road-conditions andhttp://www.bulloo.qld.gov.au/web/guest/road-conditions

For SA the best source is http://www.dpti.sa.gov.au/OutbackRoads/outback_road_conditions/area_4_strzelecki_and_birdsville_track

Wouldn't it be smart if the three states got together and produced a single up to date website or would that be federalism gone mad.

August is driest month of the year, on average, so rain may not be a worry.Check BOM site or Weatherzone, and you'll get a good idea of weather in the area, closer to your travel time.

Don 't know what way you're coming to Birdsville, but from there north should be good. Just watch the single lane bitumen from Boulia to the Isa. Often has sharp edges off the bitumen, so plan early if you are pulling off for road trains, vans or high speed locals.

G'day rojostock,

if you contact the Tibooburra Police, or the Cameron Corner Store, either of those two will let you know if there are any problems with your proposed route.
