Here's an interesting video on the Giles Weather Balloon:

I've been to Giles a few times but have never seen the balloon go up!!!

Not sure if they still let visitors watch but we were there in about May 2008 and at that time they took tour groups around the site including inflating and releasing the weather balloon, was quite interesting. John c

We called in there last August and were lucky enough to do a tour of the station. I don't know when the video was taken, but the chap who let the balloon go was there then and on his 4th or 5th stint at the station.
I'm not sure if they do tours any more as it was hit and miss as to if they did when I was there. If you can find out if they are, then it is well worth it if your in the area.

We were lucky to see it prior to the changes. You can only watch it from the car park now, not as part of the tour we had.

Thanks Stephen, lol..

Last time I went to the roadhouse it was closed and had to struggle on to Docker River :-) even the cops didn't want to come out and say hello...

I had a decent look in 1997, at the campground there was a guy playing bagpipes to the amusement of all there.
Never seen the balloon go up though :-(
