Hi fellow travellers. We are planning to travel the Gibb River Road from Kununurra to Derby in August this year. We have a very solid Phoenix caravan towed by a reliable 80 series Land Cruiser. Can I have some information from people who have travelled this way towing an off road caravan?

Just came off GRR 3 weeks ago from Kununurra to Derby and going back the other way next week. We are towing a semi off roader Jayco Destiny Outback with 150 Prado and had absolutely the best time and no problems, but road was good then and conditions I expect have worsened a bit since then. I travelled with tyre pressures at 28psi all round. You should have no problems with your setup, however road conditions will have deteriorated by August. Just drive to the conditions and don't rush. It took us two weeks and we still didn't see it all, hence the journey back the other way. Good luck and enjoy.

Although the July crowds will have undone a lot of the good work the early season graders do by August and the water levels will have dropped even further, you should have no problems with an original build Phoenix. You can check My Blogs (2008) for where we took our Bushtracker and contact me privately if you would like more detailed information about any thing.

Thanks, Ray and Mother Hen. Yes, it is an original Phoenix. I did expect that the road would be a bit worn by the time we get there. Has anyone any details of the Buchanan Highway? Would the Phoenix be OK on there?

The Buchanan won't bother you. Bit stony at the western end.
Good camping in Jasper Gorge.

As P & M said Buchanan is a walk in the park and probably the best dirt road I've been on this trip. The section from Dunmarra to Top Springs was better than some bitumen roads I've travelled. Once you go past VRD the road does deteriorate but the scenery more than makes up for it. Cheers Ray
