Australia's Longest Road?

I came across this sign claiming the Diamantina Development Road to be "Australia's Longest Road" at 1334 km.

Now according to this reference we have WA's Great Northern at 1570km, Qld's Bruce Hwy at 1670km and the SA/NT Stuart Hwy being more than twice the length at 2710km.

So even allowing for the propensity of Queensland bureaucrats to be generous with the truth, can anyone explain this claim and show how I am missing the point?
Cheers

What's the problem? They stated it as a "Road" and the others are Highways. Just Qld's long standing self interest.

I rather expected that Phil.
Perhaps I should send the Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads a dictionary?..................

When ever I venture down South to Adelaide I have fun baiting a relative over the alternating one way mess that is called an "Expressway". She bites real well when I call it a Freeway. I really don't care but I do like doing it. She's equally defensive when I refer to SA as a Nanny State. Life can be fun for grumpy retirees.

Allan,

Haven't been along all that road, but have been on sections of it many times. My theory is it's such wide, open country out there that the kilometres are longer, much, much longer. So you don't need as many for the same distance, as you would along the coast.

As for the sign, any of those brown signs are a photo opportunity for the travelling hoards, so that won't let the truth get in the way of a good stor, err.......a good photo.

TIC,
Bob

Maybe they were talking about the length of time it takes an average Bananabender to traverse the road Allan? Some people are firm believers that Austraya starts at ~138 east and ends at ~29 south.

Alan,

I had a think about what you said, what I can see is it seems be down to what a that line on the map is called, wether its Highway, Road, Way, Track, Route, Line, Outlet, Street, Drive, Parkway and yes even avenue. (tried to find one mikehzz)

So if a Highway = a road, does a road = a highway?
No quote "In places the term 'highway' is reserved for high capacity roads, in older English there was a distinction between 'highways and Byways'"

The longest f each definition I could find:
Route - Canning 685km and 473kms WA (split due to road name change)
Outlet - Huon Highway Southern 12.6kms TA
Way - Kidman 642kms NSW
Line - French 165kms SA
Track - Oodnadatta 618kms SA
Parkway - Tuggeranong 11.6 kms ACT
Drive - Larapinta 322kms QLD
Road - Diamantina 1340kms QLD
Highway - Stuart 2710kms NT and SA

But if a track, way, route, road and highway etc. are all he same then the longest identified road is "Highway 1" at 14,500kms ?
