Just driven the
Savannah Way from
Mataranka to
Cairns via Booroloola. Road is bitumen for first bit from
Mataranka and then switches to gravel. Good surface with a few rough spots. River crossings/dips can be stoney so watch the ground clearance when you hit them (go slow). Booroloola to
Normanton again road is rough for first 25Km then it was very good but again the river crossings/dips need care. Saw quite a few caravans tackling the route and they seem to be coping
well although they were not hurrying at all. Great trip but the cattle are not a pretty sight at the moment.
Karumba was a better place to
camp than
Normanton for us and the rest of the trip was bitumen and easy driving. Hope this helps anyone planning the trip.
