I'm heading up to
Cape York in a few weeks (coming from
Melbourne) and I want to re-stock the Engel with some good meat before I take on the Cape. I will want to get it cryovac-d as
well.
Can anyone recommend a good butcher near the base of the Cape? I'm thinking maybe
Cooktown, although I'm sure I read something somewhere (quite possibly here) about there being a good one at Musgrave...

Mareeba,
Atherton of
Cairns are proberly the best
places,
Cairns have a bigger choice.
Cooktown not so much. Musgrave is a road house.

Yeah I thought Musgrave was weird given that it's just a road house, but judging by BUSH CAMPER's reply below I think I must have mixed it up with Mosman. Makes much more sense...

I haven't been up that way for a few years, but there used to be a good one at
Weipa.

Mosman butchers did our cryovac when we were up that way in 2007. We will see them again next year when we do it again.
Was good meat as
well.

Sounds good, I think these are the guys I have heard of before. Did you phone your order in ahead or just
rock up? If the latter, did they cryovac it on
the spot or did you have to wait a while?

We just turned up, was very funny as we come from Bannockburn, just out of Geelong, and I'm sure that the butcher came from Geelong. While they were cutting and cryovacing the meat they handed each of us a stubby to drink while we waited, that's pretty good service!
Best butcher in town, it was a little
shop in a side street.

There is a butcher in
Bamaga. Other people said pretty good meat but I have not visited.

Last year we went to
Cooktown to stock back up as I wanted butcher sausages, not
supermarket ones. The butcher at
Cooktown did even make his own sausages as he was waiting for them to come in. We ended up at the local
supermarket in
Cooktown, I think it was
IGA or similar, at the top of the
hill. The meat on the shelf was all cryovac and was very good quality and
well priced. Wished we had not spent as much at the butcher before going to the
supermarket. We thought it was good enough value to overstock.
I wouldn't go past them.

We've been back 2 weeks from the cape and did our meat shopping in
Cairns on the way up at:
Byrnes Quality Meats
P: 07 40534522
F: 07 40534276
E: sales@wholesalemeats.com.au
They cryovac and its included in the price of your meat, not bad price or taste. I emailed the order a week before collection and asked for some to be frozen which was great had fresh meat most of the trip.

back in 2006 (when we were there last) the butcher
shop in
Weipa sold nice meat. We grabbed a couple of rib fillet steaks for dinner one night to eat whist staying at the van park, and they were so good we stopped in the next day to grab a few more before heading out to Pennefather River. The steaks we ate out there were better then the ones we ate the night before, so as we needed to back track through
Weipa to head South we stopped back at the butcher
shop once again to grab some more to eat on the run
home....sadly it was Saturday and the guys were cleaning up / closed as we arrived at the shopping centre at midday, so we missed out on getting more.
