Back in 2003 there was an old phone box at
the junction of the CSR and the track to
Kunawarritji just before
Well 33 (heading north). I was wondering if it was still there? Can anyone confirm please?
It was as pictured
here (That's David).

I was there 5 weeks ago and I didn't see it.
The CSR & Jenkins Track have been extensively graded at this
intersection and are very wide, likely it was removed during road works.
I don't recall seeing it in 2009 either.

Hi Michelle,
I used it a number of times when W33 was isolated but when
Kunawarritji came along it was removed. I think the main reason for it being there was for the Traditional Owners and safety, (a bit like bores and tanks along tracks).
Anyway I saw it about 4 years ago, it was stored (not commissioned for use) west of the old
shop but near where they supplied unleaded petrol from 200 litre drums (at
Kunawarritji).
Nowadays I believe fuel is sold from a new
shop that's located further south - in front of a small
hill that we had to go over to get to the old store.
Maybe someone going through could
check and see if its still there.

Ok, glad they kept it somewhere. It was rather unique. I will remove it from
Places though as I said, just tidying up the POIs so we don't have things turning up on the new EOTopo 2015 map that shouldn't be there.

Whilst there is more recent information it was there in 1999.
Only available for reverse charge calls.
The operator asked the called person if they would take a reverse charge call from "The Great Sandy Desert".
Not a lot of people would have received that call (at least back then when only a few hundred people per year used the track.
Bit of history
Cheers,
Jim

Thanks Jim
I had forgotten that - by reverse charges only a person didn't need to go out there and empty the coin box if it wasn't already smashed.

Michelle,
The old phone box, was there in June 2007 and when I went back in June 2008 the phone box had been moved into
Kunawarritji community. For the next 2 years I did see it there but after that it has gone.
The only evidence is a concrete cover on the ground near where the phone box once stood.
