Free camping near Yarrawonga

G'day everyone,
We are looking for riverside site free campsite within 4 hours or so from Melbourne. The distance is no real issue.
We (myself, Kim, the good lady and Will, 12 YO)are in a 2WD wagon, towing a trailer with our tents in it. We are self sufficient and looking for a nice spot to relax, have a fire, do a bit of fishing and explore the region.
We'd prefer a quieter place than a crowded one and was thinking Yarrawonga area.
Planning on going for the week of the Melbourne Cup.
Last year we went to Menindee Lakes which was great!
Most of our camping has been in caravan parks and we'd like to do more free camping.
Thanks in advance for your information.

don't like your chances of finding a quiet spot on the long weekend. go over the Mulwala bridge and go around the lakes edge and check it out. Very easy to get to but I would imagine it will be busy

Hi Mick v1,
Sort of thought that may be the case with it being busy.
Do you think that it will be packed out for the rest of the week - Wednesday to Sunday?
Any other suggestions for a "quietish" place for the week?

Google Bruce's Bend and surrounding areas. This is on the Murray just downstream of the weir. It's actually listed on this site as a camping area, see the first link

G'day Phantom,
There are 3 spots I know.
Forges Beach No2, Chinamans Bend and Greenbank Reserve.
Nos 246, 245 and 244 in the Camps Aust Wide Book, all on the river.
Forges is on this site. Free camps, take dogs and slippery if wet.

Cheers,

Bill

Thanks Mick, IT and B1B2,
Will head up there and see what we can find. As we have the whole week off, should find somewhere quietish.
