I have a friend with the petrol 4L v6 Discovery 3. His mechanic recently installed an earth lead, and three days later his alternator blew up. Does this sound too coincidental?

Probably best to post this on a forum that will give you informed advice.

My first thought is why did the mechanic install a new earth lead?
If the answer is that the ignition light was glowing, then just a case of misdiagnosis of a failing alternator.
AFAIK there is no relationship between the new earth and an alternator failure.
I bet the car has done quite afew km and the alternator was dying.
Before another round of LR bashing the alternator on my D2 is exactly the same one as on a Landcruiser so it should never fail I guess.

Geez your are getting a bit defensive about the whole LR thing.

If as you say it the same alternator as a land cruiser than it cant be the problem .
So are you saying Toyota alternators never fail !

That's good to know.

Installing an earth lead direct to the battery is a no no as there are systems that monitor the battery from that lead and having power return to the battery - post bypasses this system. Two large earth posts are provided just in front of the battery for connecting earths so that any power returning back to the battery is monitored.

Maybe the installer did not know this and installed direct to the battery but this is unlikely to cause alternator failure. If it has failed (how was this determined) then most likely it was coincidence.
