Hi All

I have recently entered the 4x4 world having purchased a 1996 GQ RX 2.8TD LWB Patrol. Having found the time to calculate the fuel use I have found that I'm getting about 7.5L/100km highway driving (generally long runs between Perth(WA) and Wiluna). Odomemter reading is ~98,000 Km. I have fitted a Finer foam air filter (the previous paper filter seemed to have been sprayed with oil!) Current tyres are 7.5x16 8ply dunlop(circumference or width not shown on tyre that I can see). Can anyone advise me if this fuel use is to be expected, or do I need to get things like the injectors, diesel pump, turbo serviced?

Keith
Don't touch anything - if I was getting 7.5l/100k the first thing I'd check is my calculations. Best I can get out of my 1998 gu 2.8tdi is 11.5l/100k highway cycle.

Thanks Patrol22. Just checked the figures as you suggested. There are that many figures on my bit of paper I read the wrong ones! Figures should read 7.5km/lt or 13.35Lt/100km Duh!

Mate

If you're getting 7.5L/100km you're real bloody fine ... don't change a thing cause the ecconomy is exceptional.

Keith you gave me a good laugh! First I thought you had an exceptional vehicle - the I read on! I would have thought 11 - 11.5 l/100k would have been achievable with that vehicle. I get that at 110kph in a 3.0l TD Prado.

Hi Keith,
I have a 6 year old GU 98 Patrol with the 2.8 turbo intercooled diesel.
To date I have travelled over 190,000 ks.
Mine would be one of the last of these motors prior to the new 3 litre being launched. I do prefer the older 6 cylinder as it runs more quietly and more smoothly than the new 4.
The 2.8 is certaily tried and tested. It has been around for years.
At first I was disapointed when just 6 months later after I purchased mine the 3 litre was launched by Nissan - but now I,m happy I got the older model especially after reading the problems mentioned on this web site with the new 3 litre.
Although the problems seem to be rectified now! Some 3 -4 years later!
My fuel economy is good @ approx 10 - 11 klms per litre provided you stay at 100kph max or otherwise at around 110 kph the consumption is more like 11 to 13 ks per litre. Still a lot better than a petrol engine.
The gearing and the smaller capacity of the 2.8 restricts the performance of the vehicle. But once you learn its limitations you still have an extremly reliable truck and one which is very economical provided you you don't drive it as fast!
