Possibly you have connections reversed Did you make sure they were at the same place as on the old one.

Batteries come "Handed" like + can be at either end depending on the vehicle

Nathan, When you say "arch the terminal" do you mean that there is arcing at the terminal? If so then the problem is a loose terminal. Remove the terminal bolt and prise open the terminal a little, replace the bolt and push the terminal firmly back onto the battery post ensuring that the terminal settles right to the bottom of the post. Then firmly tighten the terminal bolt.

Also be sure that the cable is firmly attached to the terminal.
Cheers

Hi Nathan,
First check that the terminals are going on the right way.
They should be marked + or -.
the posive terminal is always the larger one.
batteries have different terminal placement depended on there correct fitment.
If the terminal placement is correct and you are getting arcing when connecting you have some sort of drain on the system ie. lights on , interior lights on, ignition on.
turn every thing off and try again.

Nathan ...Go to the Pajero owners club of Vic...Excellent site and they are a wealth of knowledge. These people own Pajeros and more often than not can be of great assistance. They will let you know of any idiosyncrasy's of the various models. Could be a starter motor issue .
