Is the Major Mitchell's Campsite suitable for an overnight (or two) for Camper or Van? Photographs show shelter shed and level, shady grounds. Any thoughts please.

I have never camped there but we often use the Neil Turner Weir (along with 2000 others) if we are passing through Mitchell. It is just on the outskirts of town.

There may be even water in the river after the rain.

Wikicamps claims it as a campsite

Thanks Alan.
Have had to squeeze into Neil Turner Weir a few times before. Plan to head out through that way in couple of months, and will check it out as a campsite. Will post findings on ExplorOz, afterwards.
Ciao,
John

We have camped there it is right on the highway so can be a bit noisy with trucks.
Donnger shower sheds. and caravan parking on bitumen.

The spar is nice in town.

We tend to go on to Morvan to camp at show ground Nice showers and good tasting water. Plus off the highway a bit

We were there a couple of years back, camped at the Weir as the tracks into MM were in bad condition.

Tks for reply Peter.

I think you might be talking about the Major Mitchell Caravan Park, where I've enjoyed staying a few times. The Major Mitchell's Campsite I'm researching is some 40km north of the Town of Mitchell, off the Mitchell-Forest Vale Rd where Major Mitchell established a second depot in 1846 on the Maranoa River during his fourth major northern expedition.

I plan to visit that Campsite on my way to the central west in a few months. I'll have some more detail, with photographs, afterwards. As they say, watch this space!

If interested, have a look at the Royal Geological Society of Qld notes including Mitchell's expedition.

Cheers,

John

This is one of the best caravan Parks in Qld, if not Oz. Amenities are wonderful, and staff are even better. Communal camp fires etc are held I think each night. I recomend this place.

Totally agree my friend. But my query was as per my reply to Peter above. The Major Mitchell Campsite, some 40km north of the MMCP, looks interesting, to me. Am heading there (Campsite NOT Caravan Park) in a few months en route to Central Qld.

Cheers,

John

Mate - why not send Warrie NSW (who took the photos) a member message? (assuming he's still a member of course).
