Greg, interested to see how things go. I've had three sets of ST's, the last being the 285 75 16 as are yours. I am currently running Dick Sepek FC2's in the same size and have had some issues. I've decided to run these as a road set and have bought a 2nd hand set of ST's at 90% tread on 16" steelies as off road tyres for this years trip. I've never had better than 40K out of a set but considering that 30K of that is the worst outback conditions you could throw at a tyre, I'm more than satisfied. Will be keen to see how you go with the STT. Cheers Mick.
