Comment: First trip to the Red Centre (via Strzelecki, Birdsville & Oodnadatta T

Great blog Timbo, i am looking at doing that almost exact same trip next year so i found this really interesting. One question, you mentioned a couple of "surprising" punctures, surprising because of the tyres you are running. What tyres did you run for this trip? I have a current model Isuzu DMAX (same as the rodeo/colarado), i hope they have improved those fuel pickups. Again, well done on the trip and the blog.

Thanks Tonbon. I was using BFG A/T's all over but when I had to buy a tyre at Mungerannie, they only had Bridgestone 693 in my size. I reduced pressures (to 20psi front, 26psi rear) for dirt roads but I think the tyres may have been around 50% worn when I started out - newer tyres with more tread generally have better puncture resistance, but no tyre is puncture PROOF! Maybe I was unlucky, maybe I wasn't careful enough to avoid the sharp rocks (they say: avoid anything big enough to cast a shadow!). The first tyre, I'm not sure if I'd had weakened the sidewall by letting too much air out the day before while 'playing' on Big Red, or if it went down slowly and I didn't realise until it destroyed itself. I've since completed a trip to & around the Kimberley (still have to blog that one!) and I've never had any other punctures (besides the two mentioned here).
