Hi
Have been following your blog with great interest, as am in process of organising a very similar trip/expedition for the period May-August 2011. At this stage, a convoy of 4 vehicles, departing from
Brisbane.
Already your tip about refillable gas cylinders in Russia has been worthwhile !
Would love to have a yarn at some stage to talk through your experiences.
One quick query in the interim, I have been told UHF radios are not permitted in Russia. Is that consistent with your experience ?
Cheers
Denis

Hi Denis,
Both vehicles had UHF radios and GPS units, neither of these were a problem for the police or border guards. Both of these pieces of equipment were invaluable and I would make every effort to take them again. The Garmin GPS unit had Russia background maps installed, this was helpful.
Going with four vehicles in convoy would almost certainly become awkward, we often found space only for two vehicles particularly in the very dense Russian forests. There are absoulely no commercial
camping areas and you need to seek out
camping places almost every night.
In my opinion, you should be prepared to split into two groups of two vehicles where
camping places are difficult to find. The four could meet up along the road when the space allows all four to
camp together.
I suggest looking at Horizonsunlimited.com for info on overland travel. There is to be a meeting of HU in Qld on April 22-25, 2010, worth going although most HU members are motor cycle overlanders they do accept 4WDers as members and participants.
We have just sent Essy back to AUS by container. We will be back in AUS soon. Drop us a line and we may be able to help with your planning.
Cheers Chris
