Comment: Trip Planning - Choosing your travel companions wisely.

Hi Mick,
Have enjoyed reading of your travels and looking at your photos.
You have actually put down in writing, brave words. It is hard sometimes to actually say what you are thinking and move out of a situation that you are not happy in. We have been away with friends and family members and it certainly takes patience and diplomacy sometimes to keep everything running smoothly. But it is a human failing when people say and do different things to how we think it could and should be done. The whole point in going away is to enjoy the experience, not to get upset and stressed. Nowadays, we tend to just travel by ourselves to save getting into any situation. Saying this though, if you join a group to tag-a-long with it does help if the co-ordinator knows what they are doing and can keep the group together and happy as well as listen to others' ideas and accept healthy criticism without being offended. Good luck and enjoy your future travels. We might even meet on the track sometime.
Cheers Sally.

Hey Sally,
If someone is co-ordinating a trip, it's up to the participants to make that call as to the co-ordinators, and their suitability to make the trip. If you go on a paid Tag-a-along you will get a lot of very professional information up front (I hope). This person will tell you exactly what they will and won’t do in all situations and what is expected of you and your vehicle. In other words just what you are getting for your money. It’s a professional service for which you pay money, therefore you must feel confident in the leaders ability.
In a friendly tag-a-long, the co-ordinator may be someone who may be more experienced, have the same experience or less experienced than you. They are someone who’s had the wherewithal to organise or encourage a trip but the responsibility is on everyone to pool their knowledge , thoughts and ideas through co-operative planning. I’m sure that co-ordinating person is wanting you to all chip in and help.
If you’re in a situation where someone constantly says “It’s my trip, I’m the leader and we all do as I say” ...well, I don’t think that’s a good start and common sense tells most people that this isn’t something you want to be involved in. The big danger in this situation is when someone believes, and causes other people to believe their own propaganda. When it comes to the heavy stuff, it’s a vast disappointment, and very possibly dangerous, when the wheels fall off and the leader is prepared to abandon you.

One in all in and “co-ordinator” is a much nicer word than “leader” isn’t it. Cheers Mick
