I find having a book in the car useful, as come 4 pm and if we haven't found a nice private spot for overnight, i get out Camps 5 (or in WA and NT the more comprehensive Jan Holland Priceless - series). Computer access is usually out of the question. However, aside from the listings here, a very good free and low cost on line resource is

I firmly believe that 5th in manual and overdrive in auto are not towing gears. The fuel saving is neglibile, and may be in fact more in overdrive when the auto is hunting (i know you only asked about manual). The cost and inconvenience of a gear box failure in a remote location would be huge.
