I have recently bought an lead petrol FJ45 and seem to be getting very poor mileage. Driving around town it gets 12miles to the gallon (5km per liter). Mechanically it is good, I’ve had it serviced by a Toyota Mechanic I trust and he doesn’t seem to think much of it.

It has unusually high RPM as well, idle at 1100, and when traveling at 90kmph it sits on 4000 RPM – this doesn’t seem right to me. I think the Diff ratios might have been changed, is this common to the vehicle?

Does anybody have any ideas? Or am I just crazy.
Thanks Tait

The idle is far to high, should be around 600 rpm.

A diff change to 3.7 and larger dia tyres is about all you can do to drop the revs at speed or put in a 5 speed box.

I have a fj60 with a 2F and 5 speed It gets about 25l/100k's I'd love to get 20/100
as I'd have a bit better range
it has a set of extractors and I fitted 33 by 10.5 bf at's to increase ground clearance and hopefully MPG. Got the clearance but not really any better at MPG around the traps but is better on open road.
Havent tried driving in sand yet and figure it'll be really heavy going there.
Mine idles at approx 600 as per book

My old FJ55 with the 2F motor used to give me 14MPG or 5k/l or 20l/100K

In the rough stuff I used to get 25k/100l and once on the Canning got down to 27l/100km

There is not much you can do about it. Just carry more jerries and pay the fuel price.

Cheers,

4000 rpm at 90 kmph??????
Something drastically wrong here! Odd diff ratios??
Wrong speedo gears etc??
Should be approx 2500/2700 rpm @ 90kmh methinks.
Had a 1884 petrol and best I could get was 17 mpg and 15 was normal
