Hi all,

I have been unable to find a new V8 manual demonstrator at any
dealer, they are all autos. I've read many reports which praise the 5
speed auto but none which recommend the manual. Can anyone confirm whether the clutch shudder problem was ever cured by Toyota or how the manual
drives with the V8.

Hi Landcrusa,

I have a 2000 4.5L Manual 100 series comming up to 100,000ks and have never experienced the clutch shudder others are talking about. Maybe Toyota have fixed it.

No it's not fixed yet. Still plenty of cases of shudder being reported. Seems to develop around the 50K mark depending on usage. (towing/hills) Over size tyres often excentuate the problem. My dealer seemed to think that softer engine mounts added to the problem hence it not being an issue in the 80. Craig.......

"The Rocket" (my car - 98 100 sreries) whent into toyota not long ago for the same problem - clutch shudder ( they put in a heavy duty clutch (bull bleep !)) Still Shudders ... To overcome this fantastic! Toyota Feature - Ride the clutch like I do!

I own 100 series TD, year 2000 with about 59K on the clock. It shudders when clutch is engaging from a standing start and after gearchanges. It's annoying.

I got a 2001 Standard diesel, it started to shudder around 85000km, took it Toyota and got them to check it out, they recomended that the cluth be replaced. I then asked if this was a warranty job and then thet said yes, I said you better book it in then.

Clutch was then replaced under warranty and all was good for about 3 weeks and then the shudder returned, took it back to Toyota who did some adjustments and all was good but not perfect.

My old man has a 99 GXL diesel and he has had the same problems.

I also have a 2001 4.2 GXL and have experienced clutch shudder, particularly when cold, since about 35K. Toyota deny there is a shudder problem and when I referred the problem to Toyota Aust they merely referred me to the dealer. I have been told by a friend in the trade that the problem is actually in the flywheel. I now also ride the clutch and have got used to it, as they won't do anything under warranty.

I have a 2003 TD and since day 3 when engaging the clutch at a stand still the thing rocked forward(or reverse) as if it was slowing down the input shaft. Took it to Toyota, they replaced the clutch, found a bearing siezed to the shaft etc. Guess what, still does it and now im told it is "normal"
