Comment: The Calvert Scientific and Exploring Expedition of 1896

G'day MO,

Sitting here, aircon on a cool 22c and sipping a pre-dinner drinkie, it is hard to imagine the hardships that these old style explorers had to endure.

We, GDEC plus others, venture into this type of country blessed with the information that these people had the foresight to leave behind.

Today, of course, everything is well researched -thanks indeed to the type of people in your blog- and with much preparation and the benefits of modern technology.....as in vehicles, refrigeration and most of the comforts of home.

hard to put it all into perspective, but like you I too have a 'thirst' for this type of travel. We are indeed lucky and I add my thanks to the explorers of old that have made all our travels worth while..

Good read, tks...

Roll on 2012..

MJ

Yes MJ, we were indeed blessed to sit by some of the wells and soaks that provided the staples of life to these hardy adventurers. We reckon it's tough having achieved the exact same distance in a day that they did with their camels and yet we pull a cold one from the fridge and char grill a decent steak on the fire. To approach the hardships, deprivation and even death with courage and a certain level of equanimity, struth what men they must have been!

Merry Xmas to you, Gilly and the clan.

Mick and Vikk.
