I've got air spring assists on my 79 series Landcruiser ute. Its mostly empty for work except when I 've got a load of gear to take to a job. Then it could be up to 900kg on there. So I pump them up for those loads and when I've got the canopy on the back going outback. Otherwise I just have the minimum amount in them. I've had no problems with them and I don't have any bricks for springs either.
They help keep the old dear on the level and that's how I like it. The only downside is there is less wheel articulation with them in. But I'm past the days of hard core offroading so that isn't an issue at all.
Just remember there are airbags and then there are airbags. Like all things you get what you pay for.
