Comment: The Gary Junction Road - More bush welding (or what you do when the axl

Hi Mick,
it's another of your good reads. Thank you

One of our camps along the Gary Junction Road was near your axle repair camp.
We camped in an area that had been used by road workers some time ago. It was at the foot of some hills, 10 km west of the border, across from a Telstra tower.

That road is one of my favourite drives. We had a grader crew about 50 km west of the border that had worked from Jupiter Well east, and another pair about 20km west of Jupiter Well. That had the road in pretty good condition.

We were heading west, so we filled up at Alice (1.66/l), then topped up at Papunya ($2.16/l), Kiwirrkurra ($2.80/l) and Kanawarriji ($3.40/l). That gave us plenty of fuel to get to Sandfire RH after the Kidson Track (Hwy) and 80 Mile Beach.

Fantastic part of the World. I want to poke arouind the back of Lake Mackay, from Kiwirrkurra to Balgo next time.

Hoo roo,
Steve

Cheers Steve. Yes it’s a good part of the world and unfortunately for me, when I’m on it, it usually means I’m heading home (damn it)! There are some very pretty spots around Dovers Hills for camping as well. I’ve puddled around some of the areas both north and south of the road over the years including the Kiwirr-Balgo Road. I’d like to get out that way again to head east from Dwarf well some day. I’ve actually spent many an hour talking to the guy who graded that track way back when and in particular the section north from Jaga Jaga. A most interesting man who has graded more tracks and lines than even the great Len himself. If only we could convince him to write a book.

Thanks for the kind words and glad you enjoyed the read. How’d you like Jaydubs welding job on the axle? He is a legend that bloke ;-)

Cheers again, Mick.
