Hi Dirt Princess,
I can understand your emotional response on coming face to face with a slag heap. But there is no simple answer to the issue of environmental degradation, be it mining, agriculture or forest felling. Its been happening for millenia. But we all depend on the products produced so one way or another we are all responsible. Currently Im reading Jared Diamonds book "Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed". It deals with this issue - you may find it a worthwhile read too.
