Both Collie and Kalgoorlie are mining towns from inception (both in the 1890's). I find it hard to figure out how anyone can drive through either town now (~120 years after they dug the first hole) and whinge about the fact that mining is going on. No doubt neither area is attractive to look at (compared to natural bushland) but that is an unavoidable fact of mining.
I get more depressed driving through the WA wheatbelt myself..takes half a day - a drive through Kalgoorlie or Collie takes less than 1/2 hour (taking into account stop lights:) The degradation of the earth has over time taken many forms ..mining is probably one of the more obvious (at least to people who think green paddocks with cows/sheep or wheat are pleasant viewing:) but less significant contributors.
Cheers
